Why share?

We share to pass on knowledge, insights, and advice from personal experiences and lessons learned. Coach each other to navigate through challenges and exploit opportunities through teaching and mentoring.

How do we share?

Mentorship

“Mentoring is sharing knowledge, skills and life experience to guide another towards reaching their full potential; it’s a journey of shared discovery.” – Mentor Support Network

We believe MENTORSHIP is simply a relationship where one person starts off asking for guidance or assistance and evolves into both contributing value to the relationship. This relationship is established naturally without formality or  programs, even going so far as to avoid labeling it a mentorship. A mentorship should be based on trust, confidentiality, mutual respect, and
sensitivity. It can ebb and flow over time, sometimes experiencing extended periods of time before re-engaging due to the natural fluctuations and life
changes that are organic to most relationships.

USMC APA Professionals is one of many places where these relationships can occur. I encourage you to ask questions and to share your knowledge, skills, and experiences.

MENTEE
You may want a mentor, if you are seeking:

  1. Guidance in a general or specific professional area.
  2. Broad career development.
  3. Focused career development.
  4. Ethical and moral guidance.
  5. Assistance in navigating a specific professional settings, school, command relationship.
  6. Professional identity development guidance.

MENTOR
Some points to consider:

  1. Focus on the development of the mentees character rather than his/her competencies.
  2. Seek advice or assistance regarding sustaining and developing the mentoring interaction if needed.
  3. Help the mentee identify goals and challenges and set priorities for relevant personal growth.
  4. Seek to use supporting resources that facilitate and sustain the engagement of the mentee.
  5. Act as an experienced role model.
  6. Act as a sponsor in the mentee’s organization or network.
  7. Allow the mentee to drive the relationship and encourage them to take increasing responsibility for their own self-reflection and development.
